SMEs choosing purchasing over leasing when selecting new vehicles

    shape shape

Van Compare is a UK van insurance price comparison website. We share general information, not personal recommendations.

Should your business buy its next van, lease it, or use a mix? The right answer depends less on what other firms are doing and more on your cashflow, mileage, downtime tolerance, and how much residual value risk you want to carry.

What earlier research found (and why it matters less than your numbers)

An often-cited snapshot from 2011 (reported by Business Car, referencing MIB Data Solutions) found that among 1,317 fleet managers surveyed, most preferred outright purchase (with leasing or a mix used by others). Fleet sizes ranged from one to 200 vehicles.

Thatโ€™s useful as background โ€” but itโ€™s old. In practice, SME decisions today are shaped by tighter access to finance and higher borrowing costs than many businesses were used to through the 2010s.

    A more recent SME snapshot

A newer UK survey covered in 2022 (RAM Trackingโ€™s Vehicle Buying Survey 2022, reported by Fleet & Leasing) also suggested outright purchase remained common among SME fleets, with leasing still a significant option.

The takeaway: SMEs often still buy, but plenty lease โ€” and the best choice is usually the one that fits your operating reality.

Buying vs leasing: the practical trade-offs for SMEs

    When buying can make sense

Buying outright (or via hire purchase or a loan) may suit you if you:

    • Want full control over the asset and how long you keep it
    • Can tolerate resale or residual value swings
    • Prefer to avoid mileage or condition restrictions
    • Have predictable maintenance processes (or in-house capability)

    When leasing can make sense

Leasing (for example, contract hire or operating lease) can suit you if you:

    • Want to preserve cash reserves and prioritise predictable monthly costs
    • Prefer to reduce residual value risk and replacement hassle
    • Need easier, planned renewal cycles (for example, every 3โ€“5 years)
    • Value bundling options such as maintenance packages or downtime support

The 5 checks that usually decide it

    • Cashflow vs total cost: can you comfortably fund a purchase without starving the business of working capital?
    • Annual mileage and wear: high-mileage, high-wear work can be less lease-friendly
    • Downtime tolerance: if a van off-road stops revenue, a maintenance-backed lease package may reduce disruption
    • Replacement cycle: if you want frequent replacement (or EV technology is evolving quickly for your use), leasing can reduce long-term commitment
    • Funding conditions: SME finance availability and cost can shift with interest rates and lending appetite

A note on the wider finance market

Asset finance remains a major route for UK businesses investing in vehicles and equipment. For example, the Finance & Leasing Association reported stronger new asset finance activity in early 2025, including growth in new lending to SMEs in March 2025 compared with the year before.

Insurance implications (whichever route you choose)

Buying or leasing doesnโ€™t remove the need for the right cover โ€” but it can change what you must keep on top of:

    • Accurate use and mileage (business use type, delivery or courier work, tools carried)
    • Security and storage (overnight parking, trackers or immobilisers if fitted)
    • Finance or lease interest noted correctly on the policy (where required)
    • Driver permissions and clarity on who is allowed to use each van

Van Compare lets you compare van insurance quotes from a panel of providers based on the details you enter.
