Mitsubishi is set to return to the UK new-car market in summer 2026, with reports widely stating the Outlander PHEV and the L200 pick-up will be among the first models offered again. [1] [2] [3]
The older “Trojan” name in this legacy article refers to past L200 special editions, but if you’re choosing a pick-up for work today, the bigger question is whether the vehicle fits your payload needs, your tax position, and your insurance requirements. [4]
Double-cab pick-ups sit in a grey area: they can work brilliantly for trades and rural use, but they’re also commonly used as dual-purpose vehicles.
Before you compare trims and tech, pin down:
Payload matters for legality and running costs, and it can also affect how the vehicle is treated for certain tax rules.
For company car tax (Benefit in Kind), HMRC changed its approach from 6 April 2025. HMRC guidance says classification for double-cab pick-ups should be determined using a “primary suitability” test, and most double-cab pick-ups are expected to be classified as cars for calculating the benefit charge. [5]
HMRC also sets out transitional arrangements: if the vehicle was purchased, leased, or ordered before 6 April 2025, the previous treatment can continue until disposal/lease expiry, or 5 April 2029 (whichever comes first). [5]
If you’re a business owner, fleet manager, or employee driver, this is one of the biggest “cost of ownership” factors to check before you commit.
HMRC’s VAT guidance says that from 1 December 1999, vehicles are not treated as cars for VAT purposes if they have a payload of one tonne or more (payload defined as maximum gross weight minus kerbside weight). [6]
HMRC also warns that adding accessories can reduce payload enough to change treatment in borderline cases. [6]
In plain terms: BIK and VAT can point in different directions, so check both (and get professional advice if you’re unsure).
Pick-ups can be insured in different ways depending on use and specification. When you request quotes, be ready to state:
Accurate details help avoid delays and disputes if you ever need to claim.
