New licence rules make choosing electric easier

Electric vans can be heavier than diesel equivalents because of their batteries, which can reduce payload and (historically) pushed some models over the 3,500kg limit for a standard car licence.

The key change for many UK fleets is that a category B licence can now cover certain heavier zero-emission vehicles — making it simpler to deploy some electric vans without moving drivers onto a higher licence category.

The current UK rule: category B up to 4,250kg for some zero-emission vehicles

If you hold a category B driving licence, you can drive an electric or hydrogen-powered vehicle with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) up to 4,250kg, as long as the vehicle is zero emission. This GOV.UK guidance applies to England, Scotland and Wales.

For comparison, the normal category B limit for petrol and diesel vehicles remains 3,500kg MAM.

What this means in practice for electric van buyers

This rule can make it easier to choose an electric van where the extra weight is largely down to the battery system — but it doesn’t remove the need to plan around weight.

    1) Check MAM and usable payload before you order

Two vans that look the same size can have very different payload once you factor in battery weight, drivers, passengers and racking. When comparing models, look at:

    • MAM (gross vehicle weight)
    • Payload (what you can legally carry)
    • Your real-world load profile (tools, materials, deliveries)

    2) Make sure drivers are comfortable with a heavier van

Even with a category B licence entitlement, a van closer to 4.25 tonnes can feel different in daily use (stopping distances, cornering, tyre wear, and how it behaves when loaded). Build in basic familiarisation as part of your handover process.

    3) Don’t assume “licence change” means “no other rules change”

Moving above 3,500kg can bring additional operational requirements depending on how and where the vehicle is used. Government has recognised that some regulations applying to 3.5–4.25t zero-emission vans may act as barriers and has been consulting on changes (for example, around testing and drivers’ hours/tachographs).

For fleets, the safest approach is to treat any 3.5–4.25t van as a compliance check-point: confirm what rules apply to your specific vehicle and operation before rollout.

    Insurance: keep your details accurate

If you switch to an electric van (especially one in a higher weight bracket), make sure your insurance details match how the vehicle is used (business use type, annual mileage, overnight parking, security, and any racking or modifications). Van Compare lets you compare van insurance quotes from a panel of providers based on the details you enter.
