Mercedes-Benz Approved Used vans: what’s included and what to check

    shape shape

Van Compare is a UK van insurance price comparison website. We share general information, not personal recommendations.

Buying a used van can be a smart way to keep costs down — but the best outcome usually comes from reducing uncertainty. “Approved Used” schemes are designed to do that by setting eligibility rules and including checks and warranty-style benefits.

This guide explains what Mercedes-Benz says its Approved Used vans typically include today, and gives you a practical checklist to use before you commit.

What Mercedes-Benz “Approved Used” means for vans

Mercedes-Benz Vans UK describes an Approved Used van as one that meets set criteria, including being no older than six years and having less than 150,000 miles. It also states the van includes a minimum of three months’ MOT and comes with a minimum 12-month warranty as standard. [1]

Mercedes-Benz also highlights additional peace-of-mind benefits for Approved Used van customers, including MOT test failure cover (up to £1,500 for every 12 months of warranty) and free 24/7 breakdown cover and roadside assistance, for life (terms apply). [1]

A buyer checklist before you pay a deposit

Even with an Approved Used scheme, it’s worth doing your own due diligence — especially if the van will be earning money.

    1) Make sure the van fits your job

    • Payload, load length/height, and whether you need racking or a bulkhead.
    • Where it will operate (for example, city driving vs motorway miles).
    • If it’s a converted van (tipper, dropside, refrigerated, welfare unit), check who carried out the conversion and whether it was declared to the seller and will be declared to your insurer.

    2) Check the paperwork and history

    • V5C logbook details match the vehicle and seller.
    • Service and maintenance records are consistent with the mileage and age.
    • Ask what’s included in the warranty and what isn’t (wear items, diagnostics, downtime, and claim limits can vary by programme and vehicle).

    3) Inspect condition like an operator, not a spectator

    • Tyres (including matching type/condition across an axle), brakes, steering feel, warning lights.
    • Signs of heavy use: uneven tyre wear, damaged load area, door/hinge wear, corrosion, oil leaks.
    • Test the features you’ll rely on daily (doors, locks, sensors, heating, air con, infotainment).

    4) Confirm MOT and warranty details in writing

Mercedes-Benz states a minimum three months’ MOT and a minimum 12-month warranty for Approved Used vans. [1] Ask the dealer to show:

    • The current MOT expiry date and any advisories.
    • The warranty start date, length, and key exclusions.
    • Any included extras (such as MOT test failure cover) and the terms.

Your rights when buying a used van in the UK

If you buy from a trader/dealer, the Consumer Rights Act protections apply. If the vehicle is unsatisfactory, unfit for purpose, or not as described, you may have a short-term right to reject within 30 days (with other remedies available after that, depending on circumstances). [2]

If you buy from a private seller, your protection is much more limited — generally the vehicle must be as described, but you don’t get the same “satisfactory quality” and “fit for purpose” expectations as when buying from a trader. [3]

Insurance considerations when switching to a used van

Approved Used checks don’t replace insurance requirements. When you change van, it’s usually sensible to:

    • Update your insurer before you drive it (correct vehicle details and any security features).
    • Make sure the use is correct (social use vs business use, and whether you ever carry goods/tools for work).
    • Declare modifications or conversions (including racking, signwriting, roof bars, and specialist bodies), and check whether tools or goods in transit need separate cover.
