Keyless entry targeted by thieves: what UK fleets can do now

Keyless entry and keyless start systems are convenient for drivers — but they can also create opportunities for thieves using “electronic” methods such as relay attacks. The good news is that most fleets can reduce risk quickly with a few practical habits and some layered security upgrades.

    How keyless theft typically works

With some keyless systems, criminals try to capture or extend the signal between the vehicle and the key fob so the van unlocks (and in some cases starts) without the key being physically in the cab. Police and vehicle security bodies commonly refer to this as a relay attack.

A simple rule for fleets: layer your security

No single measure is perfect. The most effective approach is to combine driver habits, vehicle settings, and physical/electronic security so thieves have to defeat multiple barriers.

Practical steps to reduce keyless theft risk

    1) Change daily key habits (fastest win)

Police advice for keyless vehicles includes:

    • Keep keys (and spares) well away from doors/windows and out of sight at home
    • Store fobs in a signal-blocking pouch (Faraday pouch/bag) and test it periodically
    • Some forces have reiterated this advice in recent local campaigns

    2) Check whether your fob can be “switched off” or put to sleep

Some vehicles and key fobs allow wireless signals to be disabled or use motion sensors so the fob “sleeps” when not moving. Check your vehicle handbook or speak to your dealer to see if security enhancements are available for your model.

    3) Add visible physical security (it still works)

Even if the theft method is electronic, visible deterrents can push criminals towards easier targets. Consider:

    • Steering wheel locks or pedal locks (especially for high-risk parking locations)
    • Parking to reduce easy access (tight to walls or other vehicles where practical)

    4) Reduce “quick-start” and diagnostic-port risk

Fleet theft isn’t only about keyless signals. Thieves may also try other electronic routes once they gain access. Practical fleet measures can include:

    • An aftermarket immobiliser (professionally installed)
    • OBD/diagnostic port protection where appropriate (and compatible with servicing needs)
    • Vehicle tracking systems with clear processes for rapid reporting and recovery

Choose options suited to your operation — overly complex systems that drivers bypass are rarely effective.

    5) Protect tools and loads as a separate problem

For many vans, the bigger loss is the tools and equipment inside. Treat this as its own security layer:

    • Lockable internal storage and keeping high-value tools out of sight
    • Tool marking, asset registers, and photos for proof of ownership
    • Site rules for unloading high-value items overnight where possible

    What this means for insurance

Security steps can affect how insurers view risk — but only if they’re accurately declared and consistently used. For fleets, it helps to:

    • Keep a record of security devices fitted (make/model, install date, certificates if relevant)
    • Brief drivers on required habits (Faraday pouch use, key storage, locking checks)
    • Report thefts immediately and keep documentation ready (keys present, CCTV where available, tracker logs)
