How to maximise your van’s value

Vans depreciate — but resale value isn't random. Buyers (and trade valuers) tend to pay more for vans that look cared for, have provable maintenance, and don't come with avoidable admin or repair surprises.

Here's a practical UK checklist to protect value without spending money in the wrong places.

    1) Build "proof" of maintenance, not just maintenance

Service history is one of the clearest signals of how a vehicle has been treated. Carwow notes that a complete service record can significantly influence resale price and buyer confidence. [1]

    What to do:

    • Follow the manufacturer's service schedule (not a made-up mileage rule)
    • Keep invoices/receipts and stamp records (digital or paper)
    • Fix small faults quickly, so they don't become "known issues" later

    2) Keep your MOT history clean (and use it as your own audit tool)

Buyers can check a van's MOT history online, including failures and advisories. That history affects confidence and negotiating power. [2]

    What to do:

    • Treat advisories as your to-do list
    • Don't ignore repeat failures (tyres/brakes/suspension)
    • Keep mileage consistent with servicing and usage

    3) Sort the cheap cosmetics that scream "neglect"

You don't need a showroom van. You do want to remove the easy "walk-away" triggers:

    • Broken lights, cracked mirrors, missing trims
    • Badly damaged bumpers/door edges
    • Filthy cab (especially steering wheel, seats, dash)

A clean interior is one of the highest return-on-effort improvements you can make before sale.

    4) Tyres: the wrong "saving" often costs you later

Tyres are visible, safety-critical, and expensive to fix at the point of sale. TyreSafe's guidance highlights the basics: correct tyre pressures support safety and help maximise tyre service life. [3]

    What to do:

    • Keep pressures correct for your load (use the handbook/door placard)
    • Avoid mismatched tyres on the same axle
    • Don't run tyres down to the wire right before selling — it usually just becomes a bargaining chip

    5) Fit-outs and branding: do it professionally, and keep it "sellable"

Racking and fit-outs can increase value for the right buyer, but reduce it for others if they're heavy, messy, or poorly installed.

If you add graphics or a wrap, keep these in mind:

    • Poor vinyl/poor fitting can damage paint and look tired quickly
    • If the wrap changes the van's main colour, you may need to update the V5C with DVLA [2]

    6) Don't create insurance problems with undeclared modifications

Many changes that feel "cosmetic" still count as modifications for insurance. The Financial Ombudsman Service warns that not declaring modifications can lead to insurance being invalidated or claims rejected. [4]

Value angle: if a buyer asks "is everything declared and recorded?", you want a confident yes.

    7) Document what you've done (buyers pay for clarity)

Create a simple folder (digital or paper) containing:

    • Service invoices and parts receipts
    • MOT certificates/advisory fixes
    • Fit-out receipts (racking, locks, trackers)
    • Spare keys and manuals
    • A list of recent major work (tyres, brakes, clutch, cambelt/chain-related work if applicable)

    Quick resale checklist

    • ✅ Service history complete and provable [1]
    • ✅ MOT history tidy; advisories addressed [2]
    • ✅ Tyres in good condition and correctly inflated [3]
    • ✅ Fit-outs installed properly and don't compromise payload
    • ✅ Wrap/graphics and other modifications declared; DVLA colour updated if needed [2]
