The original story was a 2013 show launch — here’s what matters now
This article was originally written around a 2013 Commercial Vehicle Show “unveiling” of SmartWitness. The market has moved on: fleet camera systems are now widely used across vans, HGVs and mixed fleets, and SmartWitness itself became part of Sensata Technologies (video telematics hardware + software sold via fleet/telematics channels). What fleet cameras are actually good for
A modern fleet dash cam / video telematics setup can help with:
- Disputed liability: clear footage can support your driver’s account and reduce “word vs word” outcomes.
- Faster incident review: quick access to video and journey context can speed internal triage and evidence sharing with brokers/insurers/claims handlers (where appropriate).
- Driver coaching: trend reporting (harsh braking, tailgating triggers, distraction alerts on some systems) can be used to target training and reduce repeat incidents.
What it can’t do: guarantee premium reductions, eliminate staged claims, or “solve” every collision. Claims decisions still depend on the wider evidence picture.
What to look for when choosing a fleet camera system
1) The basics that make footage usable
- Reliable front-facing video (and rear/side/driver-facing only if you have a clear need)
- Clear time/date stamping and GPS location context
- A simple way to retrieve, lock and export footage for incidents
2) Incident workflow features that save admin
- Event tagging (harsh braking/impact triggers)
- Secure cloud upload / portal sharing (so you’re not chasing SD cards)
- Clear retention controls (so you’re not storing everything forever)
3) Installation and maintenance
- Professional fitting, tidy power routing, and camera placement that doesn’t obstruct vision
- Regular checks: lens cleanliness, storage health, and firmware updates
UK GDPR and privacy: the non-optional part for businesses
If you use dashcams/CCTV in work vehicles, the ICO treats this as video surveillance that can involve personal data (drivers, passengers and other road users). The ICO’s guidance covers what businesses need to do, including providing privacy information and being clear who the data controller is. [3] [4]
Key practical steps to put in place
- Tell people recording is happening and why (in-vehicle notice + written privacy information). [3]
- Set a lawful basis and keep recording proportionate (don’t record “just because”).
- Retention rules: keep footage only as long as needed; lock and retain only relevant clips for incidents.
- Access controls: restrict who can view footage; keep an audit trail.
- Pay the data protection fee if required (the ICO explicitly flags this for businesses using dashcams/CCTV). [4]
