Awards can be a helpful starting point when you’re shortlisting a van, especially if you’re comparing different sizes or use cases. But an award result on its own won’t tell you whether a van is right for your work, your routes, or the way you’ll insure and operate it.
Back in the 2016 Van Fleet World Honours, the winners in the main size classes included the Fiat Doblò Cargo (small van), Volkswagen Transporter (medium van, also “best new van”), and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (large van). [1][2] These nameplates still matter today — but the vehicles themselves have moved on, so use awards as a shortlist tool, then do your own practical checks.
Awards tend to reflect broad strengths (overall usability, range, suitability for fleets). Your decision usually hinges on more specific factors:
“Transporter” can refer to different generations depending on age and registration, and capabilities vary accordingly. Volkswagen’s current UK Transporter highlights payload up to 1.2 tonnes, load volume up to 6.8 m³, and turbodiesel and all-electric options, with a plug-in hybrid coming in 2026. [3]
Practical checklist:
The Sprinter spans multiple lengths and gross vehicle weights (GVWs). UK Sprinter Panel Van overview lists GVW up to 5,000 kg and maximum payload up to 2,479 kg depending on variant. [4]
Practical checklist:
The Doblò Cargo won the small van category in 2016. [1][2] Today’s Doblò range includes electric variants for frequent stop-start work and urban routes. UK E-Doblò page lists max load volume up to 4.4 m³, payload up to 781 kg, and WLTP combined range up to 220 miles. [5]
Practical checklist:
If an award winner matches your size class, ask: does it meet your payload/space needs, does the powertrain suit your routes and charging/fuel access, and is it a sensible insurance fit? If not, a different van may be better — even without a trophy.
