Many van buyers overestimate the space they need day-to-day. That “just in case” extra size can be handy occasionally — but it can also mean higher running costs (fuel, tyres, servicing) for every mile you drive.
Small vans make the most sense when your van isn’t regularly near its payload limit, and most of your work is urban or mixed driving where weight and stop-start use really matter.
Before you decide a van is “too small”, check the weights:
If you’re close to the limit most days, a bigger van may be the safer choice. If you’re carrying light-to-moderate loads most days, a small van is often a better match.
Older articles often quoted mpg from older test cycles. Today, manufacturers use WLTP and publish ranges by engine and spec.
Current UK examples (diesel small vans):
Real-world economy still depends on payload, route, weather, tyres and driving style — but the direction is consistent: lighter, smaller vans often use less fuel for the same urban job.
If your van is rarely heavily laden, carrying a larger vehicle around can be wasted energy.
Small vans are easier to manoeuvre in tight streets and multi-drop work, which can reduce minor damage risk and downtime (even if it doesn’t guarantee cheaper insurance).
If the “big load” jobs are occasional, it can be cheaper overall to:
rather than paying full-time costs for a van that’s oversized most of the year.
Insurers price on risk and expected claim cost. Larger vans can cost more to insure, but the real drivers include repair/replace costs, theft risk, driver history and the exact use (trades vs delivery/hire & reward).
So the sensible takeaway is:
For 2–4 weeks, track:
If most days are light-to-medium loads, a small van plus good storage/racking and occasional hire often beats running a larger van all year.
