Van safety is mostly about small, repeatable checks and calm decision-making — before you set off, while you’re driving, and (if it ever happens) at the roadside after an incident. Here are six practical steps that suit most UK van drivers.
If you do a lot of driving for work, it’s worth keeping a kit in the vehicle. The HSE suggests a basic kit includes items like sterile plasters, gloves, triangular bandages, eye pads and wound dressings (your needs may vary depending on your work).
Tip: check expiry dates and replace used items straight away.
A fire extinguisher isn’t a legal requirement for most private vehicles in the UK, but many drivers choose to carry a small, vehicle-suitable extinguisher as a precaution.
If you carry dangerous goods, different rules can apply (including required onboard equipment such as fire extinguishers under ADR/CDG).
A few basics can be useful for minor issues:
If you break down, prioritise safety and use breakdown recovery rather than attempting risky roadside repairs.
Loose items become dangerous projectiles under heavy braking or a collision. DVSA load guidance applies to vans as well as larger goods vehicles: loads should be properly loaded, restrained and checked so they can’t move.
Quick wins:
Seasonal prep beats “extreme survival kit” thinking. The Met Office recommends packing practical items in case you’re delayed or stuck in cold conditions (for example: de-icer/scraper, warm clothing or blanket, food and water, torch, and a charger).
Also make sure the basics are ready: screenwash, wipers, tyres, lights, and demisting.
The old advice “never say sorry” is too blunt. You can be polite and check everyone is OK — but avoid admitting blame or liability at the scene, because you may not yet know all the facts and it can complicate claims. The ABI explicitly advises avoiding “saying sorry or taking any blame” until you know exactly what happened.
