Custom racking and shelving is becoming a standard part of how many trades and fleets run their vans: quicker loading, less damage to tools, and fewer hours lost rummaging for kit.
It also tracks a wider trend: there are simply more vans in use. In 2016, SMMT Motorparc data recorded 4,007,331 vans on Britain's roads. The latest Motorparc figures (for 2024) put van use at 5,102,180 units, showing how much the working-van parc has grown.
Why racking/shelving has become more popular
For most operators, the "why" is practical rather than cosmetic:
- Time saved on every job (everything has a place)
- Less tool damage (and less cab clutter)
- Safer load area (fewer loose items becoming projectiles under braking)
- Better use of limited space, which can sometimes avoid upsizing the van
The big mistake: fitting storage that quietly wrecks your payload
Racking isn't "free". Its weight plus your tools plus passengers and fuel all eat into payload.
Before you buy, check:
- Your typical daily load (tools + stock + people)
- Your van's maximum authorised mass (MAM/GVW) and usable payload (from the plate/V5C)
- Whether a heavier racking system will push you closer to overload territory
Lightweight systems can help, but only if they're still robust and correctly installed.
Safety essentials (what matters more than the number of shelves)
1) Load restraint and a bulkhead mindset
Racking should help you secure items, not just store them. Use tie-down points, proper bins, and keep heavy items low.
2) Crash-tested strength and proper mounting
In a collision, poorly mounted racking can fail—turning tools and shelves into hazards. Prioritise systems designed for your van's mounting points and fitted to the manufacturer's instructions.
3) Don't block doors, sensors, or emergency access
Make sure the layout doesn't interfere with:
- Door operation and locks
- Internal handles/emergency release where fitted
- Cameras/sensors (particularly on modern fleets)
Insurance: you should usually declare racking and fit-outs
Even "practical" modifications can affect cover. The Financial Ombudsman Service notes modifications can impact insurance and is a common source of disputes when customers don't disclose changes or misunderstand what counts as a modification.
A sensible rule for van owners and fleets:
- Tell your insurer about racking/shelving, tool vaults, hardwired electrics, trackers, dash cams, and any significant interior fit-out.
- Keep receipts/photos and installation details (useful if a claim involves theft or load damage).
Quick checklist before you fit shelving
- ✅ Confirm payload headroom after adding racking + typical load
- ✅ Choose storage that supports restraint (bins, straps, drawers, tie-downs)
- ✅ Ensure proper fitting to van mounting points (no "self-tap and hope")
- ✅ Take photos of the finished install and keep receipts
- ✅ Notify your insurer about the fit-out (and any related security upgrades)
