Tool theft and van break-ins are a real operational risk for many UK trades. Some reporting highlights seasonal spikes and notes that theft can happen both on-site and when vans are parked on the street, not just overnight. Insurance can help with the financial hit, but prevention is what saves you downtime. Here are practical steps that reduce the chance of a break-in — and reduce the impact if it happens.

1) Protect your keys

Thieves don’t only “pick locks”. Police guidance highlights keyless/relay theft, where devices can trick a vehicle into thinking the key is nearby, allowing the vehicle to be opened and started.

• Keep keys (and spares) well away from doors and windows at home.
• If your van uses keyless entry, consider a signal-blocking pouch and check it still works occasionally.
• Never leave keys visible at work sites (cabinet/lockbox is better than a desk or van cup holder).

2) Make parking work for you

Where you park is often as important as what locks you buy.

• Aim for well-lit, overlooked areas.
• Park close to an occupied building where possible.
• Use secure yards/compounds overnight if you have access.
• Avoid repeated “same spot, same time” patterns if your van is left on-street.

Even small changes (lighting, CCTV coverage, moving to a more visible position) can make your van a less attractive target.

3) Reduce the “quick win” for opportunist thieves

Police advice focuses on basics: lock up properly and don’t leave valuables on show.

• Keep the cab clear (no phones, wallets, scanners, sat-navs on display).
• Use a bulkhead or cover so tools aren’t visible through windows.
• Avoid leaving side/load doors open during “quick drops”.

4) Secure the tools inside, not just the van doors

A common mistake is upgrading door security but leaving tools free to grab once inside. Trade-body guidance recommends layered security: physical security on the vehicle, and secure storage/marking for tools.

• Lockable internal storage (tool vault or drawers).
• Tool marking/registration and keeping serial numbers/receipts logged.
• Consider trackers or alarms where appropriate, especially for high-value setups.

5) Branding: think “marketing vs security”

Branding can generate work and build trust, but some drivers prefer low-key vans to avoid advertising what trade they’re in. There’s no proven rule that branding “causes theft”, so don’t rely on going plain as your main defence.

• Avoid listing high-value kit on the outside.
• Keep security strong regardless.
• Consider “no tools left overnight” only if it’s true.

6) Don’t create insurance problems on top of the theft

Cover varies by insurer and policy. To avoid disputes later:

• Check whether your policy covers tools in the van (and any limits).
• Confirm the overnight parking location is accurate.
• If you fit new locks, trackers or racking, keep records and tell your insurer if required.
